Is Theresa May really threatening to deport Europeans?..
That headline has had a lot of people talking, and saying how bad Theresa May is for this.
But, what is the REAL story?
It appears actually quite simple…
She wants to Guarantee that everyone, British and European can stay where they wish.
But, if Europe deports British Workers from Europe after a Brexit, then maybe Britain should do the same.
After all, if the European Union decide to eject all the British from the EU, why shouldn’t Britain do the same?
Equality for everyone.
If Europe allow the British to stay in Europe, then Britain should of course do the same.
However, if Europe allow the British to stay in Europe, then Britain should of course do the same.
The Home Secretary, Theresa May, actually said: “as part of the negotiation, we will need to look at this question of people who are here in the UK from the EU, and I want to be able to ensure that we’re able to not just guarantee a position for those people, but guarantee the position for British citizens who are over in other member states, in other countries in Europe and living there.”
This has been converted/translated to:
The Home Secretary, Theresa May, is threatening to deport European Union migrants already living in Britain when the UK leaves the EU.
Attacks on Theresa May appear to want Britain to Guarantee the Rights of Europeans already in Britain to be able to stay, even if Europe kicks our equivalents out of Europe.
I have even read this comment: “If England sends EU nationals back to Europe, she must accept the flood of angry expat Brits who will be forced to return.”
But the writer has it the wrong way round. Britain would only do that if Europe repatriates British nationals, otherwise nothing needs to change. .
Statements from the Government have included:
- It would be “unwise” to guarantee EU nationals living in the UK assurances they could stay without UK nationals abroad getting the same assurances.
- It would not be a given that EU national could remain in the UK after Article 50 negotiations conclude
