In 147–148 AD, Claudius Ptolemy called the landmass of England, Scotland, and Wales, Great Britain, and he called that other island to the left, (Ireland) Little Britain.

In 1136, Geoffrey of Monmouth called the landmass of England, Scotland, and Wales, Britannia Major (or Great Britain) to avoid confusion with Brittany (Britannia Minor or Little Britain)

and the name stuck…

Britannia was the Roman term for the region encompassing the current Great Britain and Ireland combined.
