Barbados is to become a Republic..
The Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley (elected in 2018), said that Barbadians wanted a Barbadian head of state.
This is not new, as a constitutional review commission recommended republican status for Barbados 22 years ago, in 1998.
However, what seems new, is this headline, saying…
Barbados to leave the Commonwealth..
Other countries in the Caribbean have also taken the step to become a republic.
Guyana in 1970.
Trinidad and Tobago in 1976.
Dominica in 1978.
But they have all remained in the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth actually contains more Republics than Monarchies.
32 of the 53 Commonwealth countries were Republics, with a President as their Head of State.
16 of the rest have the British Queen as Head of State, and 5 other countries have their own Monarch as their Head of State.
Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Nations.
