Birthright Citizenship in Germany


Does Germany give Birthright Citizenship..

Restricted birthright citizenship appears to have been in effect for a very long time.

Children born on or after 1 January 2000

Able to claim German citizenship from either the mother or father, being a German citizen.
Able to claim German citizenship at birth if at least one parent has a permanent residence permit and has been residing in Germany for at least eight years.

Children born on or after 1 January 1975

Able to claim German citizenship from either the mother or father being a German citizen.

Children born before 1 January 1975

Able to claim German citizenship from the father but not the mother. (There were some exceptions to this)

Dual Citizenship in Germany

German citizenship is automatically lost when a German citizen voluntarily acquires the citizenship of another country, unless they get a certificate of retention of the German citizenship.
