Americans often shorten words, when compared to the English, saying it makes more sense to use fewer letters, as it Color v Colour, and Check v Cheque, etc., but sometimes they do the opposite and make words longer, such as this example.
American : Something that 'they've gotten' wrong.
English: Something that 'they got' wrong.
I wonder why they feel it makes more sense to use more letters, when they say it makes more sense to use fewer letters.
What is America?
America is a continent containing various countries, such as Canada, United States, Mexico etc..
What is Britain?
Britain is an island group containing various countries, such as Scotland, Wales, England etc.
