The United States Senate has passed a bill to plug the leak of sales tax caused by Internet retail transactions having been able to avoid the collection of Sales tax on Internet Sales in the U.S.
This bill, called the Marketplace Fairness Act, will force online retailers that have over $1 million in relevant annual sales to collect state and local government sales taxes from customers.
Some companies already do charge these taxes, even though it seems it was not compulsory, but this change means that everyone is now treated equally.
The full bill can be seen at:
- S.743 – Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013
This part of the US Constitution raises a query though.
Article 1, Section 9, Note 5, US Constitution
“No tax or duty shall be laid on articles exported from any state.”
