National Girlfriends Day is on the 1st August each year and was intended to encourage women across the U.S. to get together and celebrate their special bond of friendship.
Reading up on ‘National Girlfriends day’ showed me that the term “girlfriend” was first used in around in the 1860s by a female to describe their female friends.
Like many words, the meaning has changed over time, and from around the 1920s began to be used to describe a female romantic partner.
However, ‘National Girlfriends Day’ seems to have reverted back to the original meaning.
