The Cost of the British Royal family

How Much Does the British Royal family cost the British people?..

Does the Royal Family actually cost anything, once everything is taken into account?

It has been quoted that the Royal family now costs 62p per year for every citizen of the United Kingdom, in 2016, up from 58p last year.

With a population of about 65 million, that would mean 65 million times 62p = £40,023,336 (to be exact) for the year.

The Income for the Royal Family comes from a share of the profits from the Crown Estate.

Under the Terms of the Sovereign Grant, the Sovereign receives the equivalent of 15 per cent of Crown Estate profits from the profits of the year ended two years previously.

The Crown Estate, whose creation dates back to 1760 when George III handed over the management of the country’s lands and coastal waters to Parliament, is owned by the Sovereign in right of the Crown. The Sovereign is the Legal Owner but does not manage or control the asset.

Over the past FIVE Years, the Crown Estate has provided the Treasury with £1.15 Billion AFTER the Royal Family costs of £202.4 million.

Crown Estate Profits given to HM Treasury:

  • 2015-16 £304.1 million, with £45.6m being paid to the Royal family in the 2017-18 financial year.
  • 2014-15 £285.1 million, with £42.8m being paid to the Royal family in the 2016-17 financial year.
  • 2013-14 £267.1 million, with £40.1m being paid to the Royal family in the 2015-16 financial year.
  • 2012-13 £252.6 million, with £37.9m being paid to the Royal family in the 2014-15 financial year.
  • 2011-12 £240.2 million, with £36.1m being paid to the Royal family in the 2013-14 financial year.

Over these FIVE years, the Crown Estates have given the Treasury £1,349.1 million, with the Royal family receiving £202.4 million, and therefore leaving the Treasury with a net figure of £1,146.7 million.

The Contribution to the HM Treasury from the Crown Estates

On a daily basis, based on 65 million population, the annual figures become:

£4.15 Gross Income per year to the Treasury, per head of population.
less
£0.62 Average per year to the Sovereign, per head of population.
leaving
£3.53 Net Income per year to the Treasury, per head of population.
